South African Renewable Energy Resource Database

Introduction

The SARERD was developed by the DME, ESKOM and the CSIR.  Any GIS maps and pictures on this site can only be used after obtaining written permission from Eskom. HomerGIS@eskom.co.za

The SARERD is a spatially defined database containing information about South Africa's renewable energy resources. The resources include:

  • biomass,
  • hydro,
  • solar, and
  • wind.

The energy potential of each resource is modelled within a geographical information system (GIS), at a spatial scale of one square kilometre.

Analysis of Renewable Energy Database

The energy resource database is in the process of being linked to a renewable optimisation model called HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables). The three parties have now developed the beta version of HomerGIS that does this. This model allows users to compare various options for off-grid electrification using combinations of available renewable energies. The HomerGIS tool uses the SARERD database, component costs, village data to calculate load values, and other inputs which are then sent to Homer for manipulation. The HOMER model is the development of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
